The Physics Department at Macquarie University is well known for its emphasis on research and postgraduate education at the highest standard, for its quality undergraduate physics program, for its innovative approach to education including its well established Bachelor of Technology in Optoelectronics, and for its contributions to university, national and international committees, policies and processes. The Physics Department is home to the renowned Centre for Lasers and Applications and is also home to the programs of two Centres of Excellence: the Centre for Quantum Computer Technology and the Centre for Ultra-high-bandwidth Distributed Optical Systems. The Astronomy and Astrophysics group has recently grown and has strong formal ties with the Anglo-Australian Observatory. The Department also has strong research efforts in Biotechnology and in material research.
