Over the last 7 years, I have been working on a project to refigure ideas about masculinity. Independent studies into the generation of secondary sexual characteristics in males lead to the development of a body of artwork that offers certain challenges to the way in which masculinity is shaped in our culture.
Choosing watercolour as a contrast to the 'macho' use of oils, I have developed a number of non-brush techniques to act as metaphors for non-mainstream masculine characteristics. The result is a series of works under the title "Pool".
The works are process-based using such things as capillary action and the different physical properties/behaviour of the pigments in water. This deliberate use of 'natural' behaviours within the art media became a backbone for the development of many of the ideas within "Pool".
