The Four-Factor Framework is a methodology developed in my PhD research to understand interaction and narrative as they unfold in and across digital and mixed media. Although much has been written about narrative and story-telling, there are few methods and no accepted or standard methods to evaluate or even understand at a granular level, how interaction and narrative interlink in computational systems.
This methodology takes as its premise that there are four elements: agency, drama, narrative centrality and engagement that are fundamental to interactive narratives. In this methodology they are called Fundamental Elements.
The Four-Factor Framework facilitates the evaluation of interaction and stories by mapping the dynamic connections between the four fundamental elements: agency, drama , narrative centrality and engagement. A key innovation of this work is the observation and measurement of change in these four elements as a story develops through user interaction and story design.
