After many years of focusing mostly on political themes and a semi-realist style of painting, my work has taken a recent shift towards a more abstract representation of existential, spiritual themes. My recent efforts have focused on the concept of a co-existence of diametrically opposed Ideas i.e. chaos and order, science and spirituality, fact and fiction, creation and destruction. I’m exploring that infinitesimal point or moment exactly between the two sides where they both co-exist. Where chaos becomes orderly, or the static balance between creation and destruction. I feel I can contribute something interesting, though-provoking and new within this field, rather than continuing to rant re-actively (as opposed to pro-actively with the new pieces) about the wrong doings of man in contemporary society.

I’m also orchestrating a gradual shift away from the medium of paint as I find the spectator can often have a more enlightening experience with other forms of expression. I find the level of engagement with painting in general to be too confined, and weighed down by the historical baggage the medium unfortunately carries. With a more immersive form of communication there is a much purer connection to and interpretation of the artwork, something more primal, even childish - like a discovery of something new.

I’d like to focus more on producing an “experience” rather than an object. I’ve always kept the idea of the viewer’s personal experience in the front of my painting practice, but I feel that I can take that idea a step further and make the viewer a more contributing participant with other media i.e. space/light/time etc. The viewer’s observation and input creates a fifth dimension to the work which can then be explored by myself and the viewer (participant). Think Robert Irwin, Olafur Elliasson, the Californian light and space movement of the 70s, Robert Smithson, Richard Serra…
